Guess on what foundations this research was built ? Yes: on the GISAID initiative providing rapid and open access to influenza virus data, itself benefiting from an enabling grant from the FP7 Health programme of the European Union of 15.2 M EUR during 2011-2017

Three key Projects financed by EU-funds now at forefront of fight against Corona virus

CEITEC . the Central European Institute of Technology, was financed by EU Structural Funds in 2012 with a grant of 190 M EUR.

Reaction to the corona crisis was immediate: CEITEC is now one of the authorized SARS-nCov-19 testing centres in Europe, having the capabilities and qualified labs to start this at short notice; and they are ramping up the production of protective shields for healthcare personnel protection, initially on the basis of 3D printers and now with a higher capacity injection moulding process.

ELI - Extreme Light infrastructure was financed by EU Structural Funds in 2012 with a grant of 236 M EUR. It's puropose is to make available to the scientific research cummunity the unparalleled power of laser-based probing and analysis, enabling molecular and atomic processes to be identified and followed in real time.

Reaction to the crona crisis by ELI Beamlines infrastructure is to offer several dedicated laser and experimental stations suited for research related to SARS-CoV-2 and offering rapid access to the experimental cluster for advanced ultrafast optical spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. this can be crucial in developing new vaccines and treatment routes. BIOCEV - Biotechnology and Biomedicine Cenre of the Academy of Sciences and Charles University in Prague was financed by EU Structural funds in 2012 with a grant of 83 M EUR.

Reaction to the corona crisis was immediate: BIOCEV is now testing hundreds of samples received from hospitals and nursing homes. And via the Czech Centre for Phenogenomics BIOCEV can accept project proposals for rodent models related to diagnosis, treatment and prevention of COVID-19 virus infection.
